Wine Making Updates at Backyard Winery
It's been quite some time since I updated the blog. That doesn't mean I put wine making on the back burner. This year was a year of learning, with many successes and failures. Our Sir Oliver Riesling has aged well. It was a hit among friends and family and probably our best wine yet. We also bottled our Hillside Zinfandel in 2010 and the first tasting was a bit of a failure. It tasted horrible. About 8 months later I opened a bottle and was happy it seemed to be aging well in the bottle. I still have about 20 bottles in the cellar aging that I plan to open early 2012 to learn from the aging process.
Our third wine we made was a Chocolate Raspberry Port. This wine was fun to make. I am not a port drinker, but sure enough it seemed like a nice holiday wine. Over 1 year of aging, we tasted it this Thanksgiving 2011 -- I'm still not a fan of it. It doesn't taste bad and make you cringe. It has a very long finish and overall for a port I think it hits the mark. But I am a firm believer if you aren't a port drinker, you probably won't like it.
We have another batch of wine NEVER released. We opened it (after 1 year aging) and had it at Thanksgiving as well. It is a port wine and it's much better. The feedback from a tasting of about 5 people was positive. I plan to release this wine in early 2012 on the website.
Our grapevines are dormant. This was our first year and it taught me a lot. We had pests to content with, black rot, tons of rain and flooding, high winds, and even an early October snow! We removed the grow tubes before the first frost, went ahead and pruned for the winter, and excited to see what happens once they come out next year. Cross your fingers for us.
I plan to produce 2 wines in 2012 -- both reds. Stay tuned and thanks for all the support.
